  1. The old plan has been scrapped according to Regalado. The DERM report was completed back in January and the county sat on it until now. They gave us less than a week to prepare and forgot to send out the report until people called asking to review it prior to the meeting. Also, Lee Hefty is retiring from DERM and he has a great staff that will hopefully follow the guidelines.

Now the Parks Department is on notice as they are spraying unknown pesticides, and driving on EEL land down water line trail.

Please just open the gate that Xavier Suarez closed to support his buddies in the HOA.

  2. Matheson West is the last undeveloped tropical hardwood hammock in Coral Gables.

I’m all for preservation efforts, but the current restoration proposal from the county is disappointingly Disney-fied. It would turn this otherwise wild place into another tourist attraction, complete with a visitor’s center and a boardwalk carving right through the park: https://www.miamidade.gov/global/recreation/west-matheson/home.page

That said, Commissioner Regalado and the Division of Environmental Resources Management have been attentive to citizen complaints (trust me—I complained). They’ve taken their time developing an environmental assessment, and seem to be cognizant of the ecological concerns this project implicates.

I remain skeptical of the County’s plans, but hopefully tonight’s presentation proves me wrong.
