Board Member Rojas Sponsors Item Requesting Report On Building Safety Protocols At Miami-Dade County Public Schools

On July 14th, the Miami-Dade County Public School Board unanimously approved an item proffered by Coral Gables’ School Board Member Mari Tere Rojas, requesting a report from the superintendent explaining protocols on inspections and evaluations on structural integrity of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Board Member Rojas’ board item states that, “Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has over 400 facilities, including schools and operational facilities, serving over 334,000 students, their parents, and 41,000 employees. The School Board should have a clear understanding of the different procedures in place to ensure that structural integrity building inspections and follow-up actions are implemented in a timely fashion. Therefore, this agenda item seeks to direct the Superintendent of Schools to present a report at the Facilities and Construction School Board Committee meeting on August 11, 2021, with information related to protocols for building inspections, evaluation of structural integrity conditions, educational facilities code compliance, and possible budget enhancements to improve the delivery of these functions, if applicable.”

“Even though out buildings are thoroughly inspected every five years to address any detected deficiency, it really is a ten year cycle to get to every school that we represent. and so I felt that it was imperative that we follow up accordingly, because this board has a responsibility to gather as much information as we possibly can, so that we can have frank and open discussions related to such an important subject matter. This is truly not about a process it is truly about our responsibility also…to dot our I’s to cross our T’s and to do everything in our power to try to work cohesively with the superintendent to ensure that our school facilities are safe and sound for our children and for our workforce,” said Board Member Rojas as she presented the item at the School Board meeting.

The item was co-sponsored by Board Members Steve Gallon III (Vice Chair), Lucia Baez-Geller, Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Christi Fraga, Lubby Navarro and Luisa Santos.

The report will be presented at the Facilities and Construction School Board Committee meeting on August 11th.
