Official Press Release of The American Legion Florida Department
Florida American Legion Boys State (FALBS), Florida’s premier youth leadership program, today announced the election of 16 mayors at its 78th session. Mayors are the first officials elected at Boys State and lead their cities throughout the program.
“In just a matter of hours, these young men demonstrated to their fellow citizens qualities of leadership, drive and service,” said Florida American Legion Boys State Director Andrew Satterlee. “Mayors – many of whom move on to higher office at Boys State – set the tone for the week and help lead their cities in simulations, efforts to score well on academic exams, win the dodgeball tournament and have a strong presence in the mock state government sessions.”
Oscar Minoso-Rendon of Coral Gables Post 98 was elected Mayor for Coral Gables.
Florida American Legion Boys State (FALBS), is Florida’s premier youth leadership program. Supported by the men and women of the American Legion Department of Florida, 2022 marks the 78th session of Boys State. Among one the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students, FALBS is a mock government program in which rising seniors organize and run their own local, county, and state governments for one week in Tallahassee. Throughout the week they attend college-level civics and Florida history classes and hear from a wide range of guest speakers. For more information, follow FALBS on social media or visit www.floridalegion.org/programs-services/boys-state/.
It’s impressive to see how quickly these young leaders stepped up at the Florida American Legion Boys State. Oscar Minoso-Rendon’s election as Mayor of Coral Gables shows his leadership potential. This program not only encourages civic engagement but also provides valuable experiences for future leaders. Kudos to them! 👏🇺🇸
Such refreshing news! Glad to hear our youth are learning positive ways of becoming involved, responsible citizens.
