On Tuesday, June 21st, Coral Gables Vice Mayor Michael Mena sent out an email announcement to supporters informing them that he had decided not to seek re-election for a third term.

“As I reach the final ten months of my second term in office, and my wife Lisa Marie and I consider the realities of continuing public service while juggling the increasing responsibilities of being parents to our two beautiful daughters Aria and Pilar, as well as our respective professional careers, we have made the decision that the best path forward for our family is not to seek re-election next April 2023,” announced Mena.

He was first elected to the Commission to fill the final two years of Commissioner Jeannett Slesnick’s term when she resigned in order to run for Coral Gables Mayor in 2017. He was subsequently re-elected in 2019 without opposition.

Mena has been a strong advocate for improved parks and open spaces. He placed children and families first and worked to ensure our City was a better place for future generations.

In the email he explained that “it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your Vice Mayor and City Commissioner and I look forward to fulfilling the remainder of my second term in office. I take great pride in the city’s many successes during my time in office.”

“I want to thank the residents of Coral Gables for placing their trust in me and providing me the privilege of serving you. Coral Gables has many dedicated and involved residents and I wanted to make this announcement now to give anyone interested in serving our community the opportunity to give that decision serious consideration,” he added.

This adds a second open seat for the April 2023 municipal election, as Commissioner Jorge L. Fors, Jr. had previously tendered his resignation effective November 22nd, in order to run for Miami-Dade County Commission.

  1. Wonderful news‼️ 🎊🥂🎊 We need to replace a few more…
    and we will🇺🇸

  2. I agree 100% with “two down and three to go”. Their arrogance and false promises are an insult to the residents. Coral Gables is no longer what it used to be.
This is the he first time I write an email. There can’t be a duplicate.

  4. Dear Boston Strangler, folks don’t know you had to relocate to Gables area; Biscayne corridor cleaned up. Gentrification/ Jain revamped the Biscayne motels. Annexing Little Gables, gaining more 8 ST frontage would help. Gables politicians maybe think an Unincorporated Dade/ Little Gables problem. Maybe that’s why they don’t want to annex; don’t want that problem/ can say not really on Gables border/ backyard.

  5. I am sorry to see Mena leave the City of Coral Gables. I had the fortune of sharing my troubles and was very supportive and compassionate. Good call to spend his valuable time with family. Wish you all the best.

  6. Mena is a garbage human being. Check out how he applied for and got PPP money while holding 2 jobs- working as lawyer for John Ruiz and Frank Quesada and a Commissioner salary.

  7. Boston strangler right on, for years i been asking and have letter asking for help in this matter and once they get in they don’t do anything. thank you if you run you have my vote.

  8. He knew he would not be reelected, so why embarrass yourself. Now the other Commissioners and Mayor are on the slate to be voted out. WE THE PEOPLE are sick and tired of you and the staff at City Hall not listening to us. You have had deaf ears to the Community and we will not stand for it anymore. The swell has started to vote every single one of you out and take back our Community, AND do not forget to take the dictator City Manager with you. We want no more construction / concrete, no more concessions to developers ( Alan Morris), no more Hub and architectural exceptions, no more deals that were not handled per protocol ( WaWa), no more parking lot sales, no more decisions that the staff thinks are better than the citizens of Coral Gables, and no more deaf ears. This is our City and we are the ones who pay your salaries. We are the ones whose requests should be handled the way we want them to be handled.

  9. Thank you Mr. Mena for all your time dedicated to our Beautiful City of Coral Gables among many duties as a parent and professional lawyer.
And let the “pimps from Calle 8” run for your seat!!!!! It’s a disgrace that this City has to hear from pimps at this point in the game.
Thank you once moree for a wonderful job well done!!!

  10. Two down, three to be replaced (Mayor and two Commissioners) in the next election. We need honest candidates who have the best interests of Coral Gables and its residents at hand, not politicians who speak out of both sides of their mouths.

  11. On behalf of all of us pimps on 8th Street we wank to thank Commissioner Mena for having done absolutely nothing to stop the prostitution up here. We hope and pray that any Commissioner replacing him will similarly do nothing to protect someone else’s “beautiful daughters” from the nightmare of human trafficking that the City of Coral Gables tolerates daily.

    Thanks, Mike!
